Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as the Test Operations Manager – 2nd Shift. If you join us in this position, you will lead a team in the development of the 1st and 2nd Stage rocket engines with a transition to production testing operations for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. The Night Shift Manager of Test Operations will have a major role at Virgin Orbit’s Mojave LauncherOne test facilities located at Mojave Air and Spaceport. This role reports to the Director of Test Operations. The Test Operations Manager – 2nd Shift is expected to lead a team of highly motivated, professional, and skilled engineers and technicians to perform safe and successful propulsion test operations and rocket engine hot fire testing operations. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket propulsion test facility in beautiful Mojave, California.
Lead a team of engineers to complete the LauncherOne 1st Stage Propulsion development, qualification, and production testing operations
Assure safe test site operations in conjunction with Virgin Orbit Safety Officers to ensure personnel safety
Coordinate emergency response with Mojave support in the event of an emergency
Assure accurate technical approach for execution of all propulsion tests and data reduction
Coordinate with Test Site Manager – 1st Shift and Test Operation Manager – 1st Shift to accomplish night shift activities that are aligned with the Program Master Schedule
Coordinate with Test Responsible Engineers in the safe operations of rocket engine testing
Must be willing to wear multiple hats…serve as the Test Director, Test Conductor, or Test Engineer as needed
Clearly and concisely communicate night shift operations and testing status to the Test Site Director, Site Management, and Long Beach Engineering/Management
Ensure test readiness review actions and constraints are completed prior to entering rocket engine hot fire testing
Lead, mentor, and train employees in all aspects of rocket propulsion systems from initial concept to testing operations

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Physics
10 years aerospace related work experience
5 years launch vehicle related experience or chemical rocket engine propulsion testing
Management of complex space system production experience
Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

Management of propulsion ground test and launch experience
Management of high performance teams including engineers, production technicians and flight operations personnel experience
Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
