DESCRIPTION

The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 45 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs. The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation – from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.

The Executive Director, Cancer Research is a high-level position with direct responsibility for maintaining and further evolving the highly collaborative programs in basic science, clinical, translational, and population-based research on which the cancer center is based. This position is responsible for, in collaboration with the Cancer Center Director, the strategic vision, long term planning, direction and overall accountability to the administration and operations of the research branch of the cancer center to include all activities related to basic science, translational, and clinical research. Working collaboratively with the Cancer Center Director and the CAO-Oncology the position establishes research priorities, strategic vision, and long range goals. The position is responsible for providing administrative leadership and strategic counsel to grow Moores Cancer Center’s extramural funding portfolio, while partnering with the research community to obtain and negotiate awards, steward sponsored funds in accordance with regulatory requirements, provide technical expertise to the research community, and encourage continuous professional development of Cancer Center research endeavors. In addition, the Executive Director has external roles that are campus-wide, community-wide in the San Diego region, and state-wide through California. The Executive Director represents UC San Diego and the Cancer Center with statewide and national organizations. This position will create an environment that ensures: A) An optimal balance of compliance with efficiency, which enables streamlined processes; B) Open communication channels and high standards for customer service; C) Flexibility to adapt to the changing research environment and strategic investments; D) Defined roles and responsibilities both internally and across different units; and E) Effective delegation, oversight, and support from leadership and management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate degree in Biology, Medicine, or similar scientific discipline directly relevant to the field of oncology research.

  • Extensive leadership and management experience in the field of cancer research and cancer treatment.

  • Knowledge of and expertise in federal rules and regulations governing NCI-sponsored institutions.

  • Experience with entities whose primary or significant mission is fund raising.

  • Broad management background within an academic center.

  • Experience with the facilitation and development of outreach programs.

  • Excellent financial management skills with knowledge of accounting principles and procedures for budget planning and analysis.

  • Extensive experience and credibility in addressing complex clinical budget/finance, facility and organizational issues.

  • Experience with public relations.

  • Demonstrated proven ability to manage complex and varied research and clinical organization.

  • In-depth experience in strategic planning and program development for a large and rapidly expanding clinical research cancer center.
