BP Americas, Inc. Biosciences Center Enzymologist in San Diego, California
Biosciences Center Enzymologist
Corporate & Functions
The biological sciences are strategically important, growing in capability, and possibly disruptive to BP’s business model. BP established a Biosciences Center (BSC) to maintain critical mass in biosciences capability, to perfect current opportunities, and to assess future opportunities across the range of BP’s businesses. The Center is closely connected to BP businesses and external technologies to ensure the expertise required to progress opportunities through the early stages of technology development and to advise businesses on biological issues and partnership opportunities. The Center operates similarly to a start-up company, and requires a team made up of flexible, multi-skilled, innovative members that can work collaboratively across the research portfolio.
The Job is for an enzymologist or protein engineer, skilled in the art of protein design, who can take lead enzymes or de novo sequences and optimize them for better performance. They will provide expertise in enzyme kinetics, enzyme assays and enzyme development, including enzyme structure/function, across multiple platforms for the development of enzymes of interest.
As a Enzymologist for the BSC Science team, the initial focus of research activities will be on:
Support of programs through enzyme discovery, enzyme improvement, and biochemical assay development and execution. The Enzymologist will also play a central role in highlighting bottlenecks in enzymatic processes and contribute to the Center’s development goals.
Enzymological and biochemical support for the fermentation organism development program to produce a biologically-derived monomer for the production of polymers from glucose.
Exploratory research programs focused on projects geared towards finding value-added opportunities for BP’s core business strategies.
The individual will join a group of interactive scientists and should have strong communication skills and demonstrated outstanding inter-disciplinary problem solving and scientific analytical skills, with a strong interest in the pursuit of scientific discovery. There will be opportunities for leadership development focused in key project areas. This position requires hands on work at the bench in the Center’s laboratory and/or at partner facilities with a recent history of delivering experimental results.
