The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking an experienced, creative, energetic and strategic communications professional to serve in the newly created Communications Manager position. The Communications Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing the overall communications strategy for the Department, which includes, but is not limited to: writing articles/publications, newsletters, marketing, social media and messaging, branding, graphic standards, website presence. In collaboration with the Chair, Director of Finance and Administration, Vice Chair’s and faculty, the Communication Manager will create innovative and exciting methods for public awareness and engagement while increasing the visibility of the department and its faculty’s activities to relevant and specified audiences.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide public relations support for audiences that are both internal and external to the university. Develop, implement and on-going evaluation of the department’s strategic communications plan. Use of analytics a plus.
  • Plan and execute activities to support public relations objective.
  • Develop, execute and oversee written communications of moderate complexity, including presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence and social media posts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Participate in regular meetings of key researchers with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications. Work with faculty on developing and posting stories and articles for internal and external audiences.
  • Prepare content for internal or external newsletters. Understand email and digital content distribution. Develop regular newsletter and/or other communications for faculty and staff.
  • Assist in developing strategies for brand managements, reputation management and issues management of moderate complexity. Lead innovative website presence working on department sites to make more of a uniform presence and single “brand”.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of effective constituent communications programs and social media strategies. Engage in all aspects of social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, blogs, Snapchat, etc.)
  • Serve as a project leader for public relations activities of small to moderate complexity.

Qualifications

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, social media or related field preferred.
  • Excellent skills using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other forms of social media.
  • Sound judgement for representing the department on the web and social media.
  • Experience in web-publishing.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize scientific materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
  • A proven track record in communications and social media strategy and management.
  • Ability to write creatively, clearly and compellingly and think strategically.
  • An understanding of building brand and reputation management.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, positive attitude and self-motivation.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and advanced skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
  • On call and ability to respond 24/7.
  • Must be able to travel between campus and Redwood City as needed.
