Summary

The selectee works in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) as a senior (full performance level) Industrial Hygienist. This position is located in Port Hueneme, CA. The selectee may serve as a team leader for those activities requiring expertise in highly complex and sensitive surveys in high hazard workplaces. While officially duty-stationed to a particular IH office location, the selectee may be temporarily assigned to other IH office locations, as required by workload demands and as directed by appropriate authority. The selectee performs duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program as specified by Department of Defense (DOD), Navy, and BUMED directives as well as the U.S. Code of Federal regulations.

Qualifications

GS -11- Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Using industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to conduct surveys to identify and evaluate health hazards and potential health hazards; evaluate physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, pesticides within a workplace environment; utilize and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, and moisture meters to evaluate environment stresses; provide recommendations to eliminate or reduce stresses for chemical and physical agents within work environments. OR Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR Successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

GS -12- Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS -11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Utilizing industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to perform, organize and/or direct on-site surveys and investigations in offices, shops, aboard ships and aircraft, and conducts literature search to determine nature and severity of hazards present; evaluate physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation , ventilation, pesticides within a workplace environment; utilize and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, and moisture meters to evaluate environment stresses; develop training programs on industrial hygiene and occupational health issues; serve as an panelist regarding industrial hygiene matters and federal regulations on physical and chemical hazards in the workplace; interpret legal requirements for hazardous material controls and disposal methods for environmental emergency contingency plans.

Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is preferred but not a requirement.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science that was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable); OR possess a Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The degree was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable); OR possess a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
